Hint :Basically, iron is an element having $ Fe $ , as its symbol and $ 26 $ atomic number. Also, iron oxide is known as rust having reddish brown as its colour and it gets reduced by carbon at high temperature in a Blast Furnace.
Complete Step By Step Answer:
Now, we know that iron oxide gets reduced in the blast furnace, so let’s see what a Blast Furnace is.
Blast furnace is basically a vertical shaft which is used to produce industrial metals such as pig iron, which is a crude form of iron and it produces other metals as well, such as lead and copper. For the smelting process fuel, that is, coke, flux, that is, limestone and ore, are given through the top of it and from the lower end of the blast furnace through a pipe series which is known as tuyeres, hot air is blown into it so that the chemical reactions can easily take place. At the end we usually get molten metal and its slag phase at the bottom of it and from the top of the furnace, waste gases are released.
Basically, the function of blast furnaces is to provide an environment for the production of pig iron by reducing iron oxide with the help of carbon, which we get from coke at high temperature in the presence of limestone, that is, fluxing agent.
So, the correct option is b) False, since chemical reaction takes place between iron oxide and carbon, which we get from coke, and production of iron and carbon dioxide takes place, that is-
$ 2F{e_2}{O_3} + 3C \to 3C{O_2} + 2F{e_2} $
Note :
For the further reduction of the carbon content of the pig iron, the metal which we obtained at the end, is smelted once again in the presence of coke and some iron flakes in the environment of Blast Furnace.
