The history of the significance of this day dates back to 1909 when the Socialist Party of America observed National Women’s Day on February 28. They were the ones that gave birth to the remarkable slogan “Breads and Roses” to symbolise their demand for improved working conditions, equal pay for equal work as well as their capabilities to fulfil their desires. At the Second International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen in 1910, the idea to observe International Women’s Day was first tabled. It reviewed unanimous approval from delegates from 17 countries and on March 19, 1911, International Women’s Day was observed in 4 European countries. In 1913, women in Russia first observed International Women’s Day on March 8 (February 23 according to the Julian calendar used in Russia at the time).
