The entry of its first case was on 22 May 1947. The International Court of Justice has entertained 178 cases through November 2019.It is the only principal UN organ not located in New York City and it’s official working languages are English and French.
The International Court of Justice is a panel of 15 judges elected by the General Assembly and Security Council for a term of nine years. No more than one judge of a given nationality is allowed to serve on the court at the same time, and judges as a whole must represent the principal civilizations and legal systems of the world. It is located in the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands.
The idea of having a World court was initiated by the Russian Czar Nicholas II. The conference involved all the world's major powers, as well as several smaller states, and resulted in the first multilateral treaties concerned with the conduct of warfare.
The first members of the International Court of Justice took place at the First Session of the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council.

Note: The ICJ elected as President José Gustavo Guerrero of El Salvador in its first meeting. He had served as the last President of the PCIJ.
The present President of ICJ is Abdulqawi Yusuf of Somalia who got elected in 2018.
