History: The first jute mill was set up at Rishra in 1855 which rose to 111 units in 1945-46. Partition of India and Pakistan caused a lot of damage to this industry as three fourth of the total acres of the production went to East Pakistan which is today known as Bangladesh.

Present condition: today in all the states, West Bengal holds the first place in the production of jute and is then followed by Bihar, Assam and Orissa. There are about 73 jute textile mills present in India and out of these 40 are located on the bank of river Hooghly only.
Other important centres are Behighat, Chandernagar, Titagarh and Agarpara etc in West Bengal and in Bihar important centres are Katihar, Purnia and Darbhanga. There are few important centres of jute industries in Andhra Pradesh also.
