It is situated in Perambur, in the Chennai suburbs. The Integral Coach Factory is one of the Indian Railways' four rake production plants, with the other three being the Modern Coach Factory in Raebareli, the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, and the Marathwada Rail Coach Factory in Latur.

The coach factory produces rolling stock for Indian Railways as well as exportes railway coaches to other countries. In the fiscal year 2017–2018, Integral Coach Factory achieved a new milestone by graduating 2,503 coaches. It became the world's largest railway coach maker in the fiscal year 2018–2019, rolling out 3,262 coaches, up from 1,437 in 2009–2010, and expects to produce 4,000 units in the fiscal year 2019–2020.
