Let us see what a generator is: a generator is a piece of mechanical machinery that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. Generators are used in agricultural and industrial settings. The law of electromagnetic force is the most extensively used principle for the design of generators.

Generators are classified as follows: Generators are divided into two categories, ac generator and dc generator.They two vary from each other in a few ways.
AC generator: The electromagnetic induction principle governs the operation of an AC generator. The armature rotates perpendicular to the magnetic field, between the poles of the magnet. With the use of a galvanometer, slip rings, and brushes, emf is induced, producing electric current, as the flux produced by the armature changes.

DC generator: For turning mechanical energy into direct current electricity, a DC generator is utilized. Faraday's rules of electromagnetic induction govern the operation of DC generators. An emf is generated in a conductor when it is placed in a fluctuating field. The magnitude of the induced emf can be estimated using the DC generator's emf equation.

All these were differences based on their working, But the major difference when it comes to its construction is only one, it is that AC generator has slip rings while the DC generator has a commutator.

Note: Do not get confused between commutator and split rings, they are the same. Another way to justify why split ring and slip rings are different is that, after every half rotation of the coil, the split ring of the electric motor, also known as a commutator, reverses the direction of current flowing through the coil whereas A slip ring is an electromechanical device that permits power and electrical signals to be transmitted from a stationary structure to a revolving structure.
