Hint: Atmospheric pressure plays an important role in the production and direction of the winds. Along with this the heating of an area is an important factor.
Complete answer: When the earth’s surface is unevenly heated it leads to pressure difference and this pressure difference is the reason for the production of winds. Sun is responsible for the uneven heating of the earth’s surface.
-Sun’s radiation is unevenly absorbed by the earth’s surface because the earth’s surface is made up of various land and water formations.
-Wind can be simply described as air which is in motion. Difference in atmospheric pressure leads to the movement of air or the blowing of wind. Wind always moves from high pressure to low pressure and because of this there are winds of various speeds.
-Uneven heating of the surface of the earth leads to the rising and sinking of air. This results in there being high and low regions of air pressure. The pressure lowers because the air rises and this leads to the surrounding air moving in to replace it.
-The speed of wind is determined by the difference in the pressure. The speed of wind and the difference in pressure are directly proportional. If there is more difference in pressure then the speed of wind will be higher as compared to when there is less difference.
Note: Coriolis force plays an important role in the direction of the wind. Air is deflected by the coriolis force and the coriolis force exists because the earth is rotating.
