Hint: The greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon that keeps the Earth’s surface warm. The majority of the gases present in the atmosphere cannot absorb infrared radiation coming from the sun to the planet Earth. There are some gases which absorb the heat and maintain the atmosphere on the planet Earth. These gases which absorb and trap the heat from the sun are called greenhouse gases.
Complete answer:
Greenhouse gases work naturally. They include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, water vapour and ozone. As they rise up from the earth, they act like glass. Earth isn’t surrounded by glass, but it is surrounded by a jacket of gases called the atmosphere allowing the sun rays to pass through. When sun rays reach the earth, some of them get absorbed by land and oceans, and the remaining sun rays reflect back to space. When the rays are absorbed, the earth gets heated and, while reflecting back the greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere, traps some of the rays due to which the planet remains warm and thus keeping enough heat inside to allow life to exist on earth. This is called the Greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is very important for existing life on planet Earth.
Note:
The greenhouse effect is very important for existing life on planet Earth. If there were no greenhouse effect present on earth, then the earth would have been a very cold place and life would not exist here. Greenhouse gases maintain the temperature of the planet. But in the last few years, the increasing population of the planet contributing increase amount of greenhouse gases on the planet with the use of fossil fuels, cutting down trees, powering cities, transportation and many more human activities have led to increase greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and thus raising the planet’s temperature which is causing global warming.
