Over a period of time the lava gets cooled over the surface and may form a landmass in the ocean that is surrounded by water bodies from all the sides. Hawaiian Islands are an example of such islands.
Another way of formation of islands is growth of co0ral reefs in the oceans. Sometimes these coral reefs may grow over the water surface and over the period of time they will become islands. Various islands in Caribbean Sea are the example of islands formed by corals.
