The Indian Red Cross Society which is headquartered at New Delhi is a voluntary humanitarian organization which aims at protecting human life and health. It is based in India. It is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and thus shares the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The society's main mission is to provide relief in times of disasters/emergencies and thus helps in promoting health and care of vulnerable people and communities. It has a network of spreading all over India through its 700 branches. As the name suggests the Society uses the Red Cross as an emblem in similar to other international Red Cross societies. Volunteering has been at the inner core of the Indian Red Cross Society since its inception in 1920. The Society has Youth and Junior volunteering programmes. The first World War set the base for its establishment. The soldiers which were affected in the first world War got relief services provided by a branch of the Joint War Committee.
