The narrator was out on a voyage with his family which consisted of his wife and two children. On their second day out of cape town, heavy storms started off towards the east. The storms blew continuously for several weeks.

The narrator was worried due to the waves that were blowing at a fast pace and were not stopping anyhow. He was so worried because the size of the waves was so big that the situation was alarming. The waves rose up to the height of 15 meters. The waves were so enormous and strong that it smashed the narrator’s head into the wheel.

He realized that there was no way that his family and he could be spared by these waves. So, he accepted the fact that he along with his family will die because of these storms. He accepted the certainty of death and thereafter began to lose consciousness.
