Hint: As we know that liquids are generally classified as polar and nonpolar liquids. All those liquid compounds with an overall dipole moment are known as polar liquid compounds whereas those liquid compounds which have zero dipole moment are non polar liquid compounds. So here we have to give a few examples of non-polar liquid compounds.
Complete answer:
Let us first discuss about two types of liquid compounds as follows:-
-Polar liquid compounds: These are the liquid compounds which generally consist of polar molecules. This means that they have to experience dipole moments within themselves. Dipole moment is generally caused due to the unequal electronegativities between the atoms attached together by covalent bond.
-For example water () is a polar liquid compound because the electronegativity difference between hydrogen atom and oxygen atom is quite appreciable due to which they experience a dipole moment.
-Non-polar liquid compounds: These are the liquid compounds which usually consist of nonpolar molecules. This means that they do not experience dipole moments within themselves.
-Few examples of non-polar liquid compounds are given below:-
(a) Toluene: It is an aromatic compound which is a colourless liquid with the smell like paint thinners. It is a mono-substituted benzene derivative that consists of a methyl group attached to a benzene ring. It is a nonpolar liquid compound due to overall zero dipole moment.
(b) Benzene: It is also an aromatic compound which is colourless and highly flammable liquid. It has a sweet addictive smell and has zero dipole moment even as a single molecule. Therefore it is a nonpolar liquid compound.
Note:
-To identify whether a compound is polar or nonpolar liquid, we can simply check its dipole moment or just check the electronegativity difference between the atoms.
-Sometimes the overall dipole moment of a liquid compound is zero even if the molecules are polar in nature. This is due to the arrangement of the molecules.
