Hint: Plants establish different mechanisms to perform respiration. They may organise structures which facilitate the process. This is done to have a better survival advantage. This adaptation is called and are porous structures

Complete answer:
Plants have established different mechanisms for respiration. Lenticel is one of those structures. Lenticels are openings that develop in the bark and the woody stems of dicotyledonous flowering plants. Lenticels perform the function of gaseous exchange between outer atmosphere and inner tissues of the stem. All tissues outside the vascular cambium help form the bark.

Bark is made up of two parts:
1.Outer bark: All the tissues that are present outside the cork cambium are called cork.
2.Inner bark: The region constitution space between cork cambium and vascular cambium is called inner bark.

Lenticels are openings that develop in the bark through which exchange of gases takes place. The cork cambium, in the place of producing cork cells, forms irregular parenchymatous cells at each lenticel.
These cells are loosely arranged with so many intracellular spaces. These cells are said to be complementary cells. Lenticels are involved in gaseous exchange between outer atmosphere and inner tissues of the stem. They are observed as porous structures.
Lenticels are present in the woody stems of dicotyledonous flowering plants. Lenticels are observed as raised, oval or circular areas on the woody stems, roots and barks. Lenticels may be seen on fruits too. Example includes - apple and pear.
Lenticels may be discoloured that is no colour in case of mangoes. Plants establishes some specialized structure for breathing in cases where there is absence of oxygen or less
oxygen. Lenticels may be observed on such specialized structures. Example- lenticels that are present on pneumatophores or breathing roots of mangroves.

A global disorder among apples called 'lenticel breakdown' occurs in apples. The lenticels develop dark 1-8 mm diameter pits. This happens in so short of time after processing and packing. This condition is observed in arid regions.

Note: Lenticels help and play a role in transpiration too. However, the amount of lenticular transpiration is quite low. The maximum amount of transpiration is performed by stomata. Lenticels are also seen on tubers like potatoes.
