Give some examples of turgor movement.

Hint: Turgor movement is a type of a movement which occurs because of the difference of turgidity of the cells that are present in the lower region and upper region of pulvinus also known as petiole. The cells in the lower region of the petiole lose water and become flaccid, while in the cells of the upper region, water gets accumulated and they become turgid.

1) Pods of plants like Balsam, opens when they mature and throws out their seeds vigorously
2) Leaves of some plants such as Venus Flytrap, in order to catch an insect which lands on its surface, closes themselves. They are insectivorous in nature and catches the prey through their leaves
3) Leaflets of plants like Mimosa pudica close in the presence of strong stimuli such as touching or blowing. The drooping is rapid as they are really sensitive to such stimuli. The leaf curls even on a light touch. If the strength of the stimulus is increased, this folding may affect the neighbouring leaves and cause their folding too. It is commonly known as the "touch me not" plant.
4) Few plants like Portulaca close their leaves at the onset of night. These are also known as the sleep movements of the plant.
5) Bending of flowers like sunflowers towards the sun is also an example of turgor movement.

It is a reversible movement caused mainly due to influx and efflux of potassium ions. The opening of the stomata is also an example of such movement. Stomata is responsible for the gaseous exchange in plants.
