Hint: The spinal cord helps to make the part of the spine. Since the cord itself is formed of very delicate tissue, it has to be protected through the means of the skeleton and ligaments in the body. The spinal cord is necessary to be protected as it is an extension of the brain and has nerves that reach out to all the parts of the body.
Complete answer:
1.The spinal cord is the distinguishing characteristics feature of chordates. It is a long, thin, and tubular structure that is made up of nervous tissue. The spinal cord in humans is located to be extended from the medulla oblongata of the brainstem to the lumbar region of the vertebral column.
2.The brain and spinal cord help to make the central nervous system (CNS) in human beings.
The spinal cord is protected through the means of structure called as meninges, bones, discs, ligaments, and muscles. The cord that is passed through the cavities of the bones of the spinal column or vertebra.
The spinal cord is protected by three methods:
1. Bone: The vertebral column helps to protect the cord.
2. Meninges: The cord is enclosed by three thin layers called meninges. The dura mater is termed as the outermost layer, the arachnoid mater is termed as the middle layer that shows spider web-like appearance, and the pia mater is the innermost layer.
3. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is defined as a fluid that circulates between the brain and spinal cord.
CSF is also located in the space between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater, the subarachnoid space.
4.The spinal column is composed of 33 vertebrae or the bones.
The space that is present between the outermost dura mater and the vertebral columns is known as the epidural space. It is filled with adipose tissue and it possesses a network of blood vessels.
The spinal nerves that originate from the cord form a component of the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
Note: The spinal cord that is developed from part of the neural tube during embryonic development. The cerebrospinal fluid that comes from the body can be sampled for diagnosis by the process known as lumbar puncture or spinal tap.
