When we get a spectrum from a source, i.e., emitted from any source then we get emission spectra. For example, from the sun or by passing an electric discharge through a gas at low pressure, etc. There are two types of emission spectra depending on the source, these are continuous spectra and line spectra.
Continuous spectra is a spectrum when the white from the sun or a bulb is passed through a prism, then the white spilled into seven different wide bands of different colors from red to violet and these colors are continuous, therefore, it is known as continuous spectra.
Line emission spectra are formed when some volatile salt is placed in a Bunsen flame or an electric discharge is passed through a gas at low pressure, light is emitted. This light doesn’t have continuous colors instead isolated colored lines are obtained on the photographic sheet and the lines are separated from each other by dark spaces. The line emission spectra can also be known as atomic emission spectra.

The spectra that we obtained from the prism contains seven lights known as VIBGYOR, in which the colors are in violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red order.
