Mitochondria are responsible for producing energy using glucose molecules and oxygen this process is called respiration. Energy is stored in the form of ATP this is required for muscle contraction. If oxygen is not supplied in the proper amount ATP is produced by aerobic respiration. In aerobic respiration, glucose is oxidized and lactic acid is made. The lactic acid is removed from the muscle by blood flowing through them. Much less energy is released during anaerobic respiration then during aerobic respiration.
