They used all kinds of means, military, diplomatic and financial to prevent this. Millions of people died during this war and America became involved in many war crimes. The massacre at Mai Lai turned many in the sUnited States against the Vietnam war. The Tet Offensive by the Communists crushed the hopes of the USA and opposition against the USA increased. The reasons that forced America to withdraw from the Vietnam war were:

The US President Lyndon B.Johnson wanted to initiate peace talk. In 1969 although protests had begun in the United States, the capacity of US troops had increased to a new level. The new US President Richard Nixon started the process of troop withdrawal and began the process of ‘Vietnamization’, which was a process to decrease American involvement in the Vietnam war against North Vietnam and moving all military responsibilities to South Vietnam. However he increased the intensity of the bombings. This led to a new range of protests in the USA and elsewhere due to the expansion of the war.
Note: The remaining Americans were airlifted on 30th April in 1975. Saigaon was captured by the People's Army for Vietnam who were the Communist forces. South Vietnam surrendered. The Colonel of North Vietnam welcomed the South Vietnamese saying that it is only the Americans who had been defeated, there is no winning and losing between Vietnamese.
