Hint: In the modern periodic table, the halogens make up the group or family XVII. As they are placed in the group of having configuration as 2, …, 7; the elements will have valency of 1 and would hence be eligible to take up an electron to complete their octet state.

Complete answer:
Let us learn the basics about halogens;
Halogen family consists of 5 chemically related elements i.e. Fluorine (F), Chlorine (Cl), Bromine (Br), Iodine (I), Astatine (At). When the halogens react with metals, they produce a wide range of salts; also, they form acids when reacted with hydrogen.
They are highly reactive at normal room temperature and pressure. They form homonuclear diatomic molecules i.e. F2 , Cl2 , Br2 and I2 (this fact isn’t proven for At). There are many more facts associated with the halogen family as discussed above like melting points, reactivities, physical states, isotopes associated etc.

Note:
Do note that factually, there are 5 elements in the halogen family as discussed above but Ts (Tennessine, artificially created element with atomic number 117) can also be treated as halogen. Also, astatine (At) cannot be treated as ‘true’ halogen as it is a radioactive element.
