Hint: Photosynthesis in plants takes place by chloroplast present in their green leaves. The chloroplast shows clear division of labour where the membrane is responsible for trapping light energy and synthesising ATP and NADPH.

Plant and green algae show photosynthesis by the chlorophyll present inside the chloroplast of green leaves. Photosynthesis takes place in two phases like light reactions and dark reactions. In light reaction and photochemical phase solar energy is trapped by chlorophyll and gets stored in the form of chemical energy of ATP and NADPH. In light reactions oxygen is evolved by photolysis of water whereas in dark reaction and biosynthetic phase the NADPH and ATP get utilised in the conversion of carbon dioxide to carbohydrates. In case of photosynthesis, ATP from light reaction gets utilised under dark reaction. In light reaction energy gets absorbed in the two photosystems where it emits electrons and this electron moves down with high potential with the formation of ATP. The dark reaction consumes the product of light reactions like ATP, NADPH, Carbon dioxide and water. In dark reaction utilization of product of light reaction takes place which helps to form carbohydrates. Dark phases occur in the stroma of chloroplast because the enzymes required for synthesis of carbohydrate are present in the stroma.

Dark reaction was first reported by Blackman, therefore it is also known as Blackman reaction, but the whole pathway of dark reaction was discovered by Malvin Calvin with his co-worker in 1954 by using radioactive tracer technique, chromatography and autoradiography.
