 A concentration can be any kind of chemical mixture, but most frequently solutes and solvents in solutions. To concentrate a solution, one must add more solute or reduce the amount of solvent. Unless two substances are miscible, there exists a concentration at which no further solute will dissolve in a solution. The solution is said to be saturated, if additional solute is added to a saturated solution. It will not dissolve, except in certain circumstances, when supersaturation may occur. Concentrations are often called levels, which can be high or low.

Concentration of a reactant is an important factor in determining the rates of chemical reactions. However, density is less important than rate determination of reaction but an important factor is physical interactions where chemical bonds are not broken.

Density is an important concept in floatation. A metal will sink in a fluid if it has a density greater than that of the fluid. Molar concentration gives the number of moles of the substance per unit volume in the mixture. Volume concentration gives how much of the solution volume is occupied by the substance. This could be expressed as a percentage. Concentrations are also given as parts per million or parts per billion. These types of measurements indicate how many molecules of a substance are present per one million/one billion molecules of the mixture. Concentration is a valid term for mixtures. Density is a property that may be used to characterise any substance.

Note: The point of saturation depends on many variables such as ancient temperature and the precise chemical nature of the solvent and solute. Concentration depends on the variation of the volume of the solution with temperature due mainly 10 thermal expansion. Different materials usually have different densities, and density may be relevant to buoyancy, purity and packaging. The density of material varies with temperature and pressure. For a pure substance the density has the same numerical value as its mass concentration.
