Hint: A genetic condition where a female is born with an extra X chromosome is called triple X syndrome. It can be passed down from a parent. Females that have triple X syndrome do not contain any symptoms or their symptoms could include being usually tall and having fertility issues.
Complete answer:
A rare genetic condition that affects only females is called triple X syndrome. It is also called trisomy X syndrome or 47, XXX. In this type of genetic condition, there are three copies of a chromosome present. In males and females, there are usually 46 chromosomes present, arranged in 23 pairs. One copy of each chromosome in the pair comes from the maternal side and the other copy in the pair comes from the paternal side. Sex chromosomes is the 23rd chromosome pair. One X and one Y chromosome are present in males while two X chromosomes are present in females. This syndrome occurs when a female is born with an extra X chromosome, and therefore has a total of 47 chromosomes.
All of the cells contain three X chromosomes of some girls and women with triple X syndrome. In other females having triple X syndrome, some cells have three X chromosomes while others have the usual two X chromosomes — this is called mosaicism. Therefore by the above discussion, we conclude that triple X syndrome does not occur in males.
Note: Symptoms of Triple X syndrome –
- Hypertelorism (known as wide-spaced eyes).
- Epicanthal folds (known as vertical skin folds that cover the inner corners of the eyes).
- Clinodactyly (known as curved or bent little fingers).
- Hypotonia (known as poor muscle tone).
