Hint: The movement of water that occurs across the plasma membrane is always affected by the amount of substance that remains dissolved in water. osmosis is the path and passage of water from a region of high-water concentration through a semipermeable membrane (that allow only some substances to pass through it) to a region of low water concentration.
Complete answer:
Now let us see the difference what will happen when cell is placed in hypotonic and hypertonic solution:
Hypertonic solution:
If the medium surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the cell, meaning that the outside solution is very dilute, the cell will gain water by osmosis. Such a solution is known as a hypotonic solution.
Water molecules are allowed to pass in and out the cell membrane in both directions, but more water molecules will come into the cell than they go out . The end and overall result is that water enters the cell. Due to entering into the cell the cell will swell up.
Hypotonic solution:
If the medium surrounding the cell has a lower water concentration than the cell, meaning that the outside solution is very concentrated, the cell will lose water by osmosis. Such a solution is known as a hypertonic solution.
Water molecules are allowed to pass in and out the cell membrane in both directions, but more water molecules will leave the cell than they come in . The end and overall result is that water leaves the cell. Due to water moving out of the cell will shrink.
Now it can be concluded that cell when Cell is placed in hypertonic solution it will swell up and when placed in hypotonic solution the cell will shrink
Note: When surrounding medium and water concentration are the same there will be no movement in and out of the cell. This type of solution is called an isotonic solution. Water movement will occur in and out of the cell equally and the cell will remain in the same condition as it was before.
