Hydrogen was recognized as a distinct element first by Henry Cavendish . Hydrogen is very unique in that it has the ability to act like a metal in an ionic compound, giving electrons to the non-metal it bonds with or like a nonmetal in a molecular compound, sharing electrons with other atoms.

So, without having hydrogen, the surface of the earth would not have enough water to shape it and would look very odd and different. However in around five billion years, the sun will run out of hydrogen. Our star is now in the most stable phase of its life cycle and has been since the birth of our solar system, around four billion years ago. Once all the hydrogen gets used up, the sun will grow out of this stable phase.
