The Madras War Cemetery was made to receive the graves of the Second World War from many Civil and cantonment cemeteries in the east and south of India where the permanent maintenance cannot be assured.
The Cemetery has 856 Second World Wars Commonwealth burials. At the rear of the symmetry the Madras 1914-1918 Memorial is situated and it also bears names of 1000 or more than 1000’s servicemen died during the First World War, their graves lie in the civil and cantonment cemeteries situated in various parts of India where it is not possible to maintain their graves in perpetuity.
The CommonWealth Graves Commission [CWGC] is now maintaining the Madras War Cemetery. The cemetery is about 14 kilometers from the central railway station and about five kilometers from the airport. From the right hand side of the road 1 kilometer from ST. Thomas Mount, the cemetery can be easily located.

Note:The cemetery is opened from 8:00 am to 18:00pm every day. Outside of these timings, the cemetery can be accessed via the gate which leads to the resident of the manager. The cemetery occupies 2.75 acres which is 1.11 hectares. Under the perpetual lease by the defence ministry the cemetery is given to the CWGC.
