Hint: "Quality" is a short story that appeared in ‘The Inn of Tranquility: Studies and Essays’ in 1912. It is written by John Galsworthy. It depicts the life of two German shoemakers - the Gessler Brothers. Written in the first-person narrative, the story portrays the life of two shoemakers who would not compromise on the quality of their product. But their sincerity, commitment and dedication to the work do not help them progress further in life.

Complete answer:
Mr Gressler worked as a shoemaker in London for many years. Apart from the name Gressler brothers, the store had no signage. He used to exclusively produce shoes on demand. Mr Gressler was so engrossed in his shoemaking that he rarely communicated with his clients. The Gressler brothers' boots were of exceptional quality. The author preferred Mr Gessler's boots over those made by larger companies since Mr Gessler's boots were more durable, made from the best leathers, and fit properly.

Mr Gessler said that his brother was a good man, he made good boots and he continued that his brother had died. After saying this, he touched the top of his head, where the hair had suddenly gone as thin as it had been on that of his poor brother, to indicate the cause of death.

Note: The story is a criticism of the modern world which thrives on false promises rather than the quality of things. In ‘Quality’ by John Galsworthy, we have the theme of commitment, determination, loyalty, honesty, dedication and loss.
