The Alpine region covers nearly 1,200 km (750 mi) in eight Alpine countries, (West to East): France, Schweiz, Monaco, Italy, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany and Slovenia. The Alps are the most vast and the highest mountain range in Europe.

The Alpine Ark is typically stretched at the beginning of the Pannonian basin from Nizza in the west Mediterranean to Trieste in the Adriatic and Vienna. Tens of millions of years of mountains have been formed when tectonic plates in Africa and Eurasia hit.

In Central Europe, the Alps are a crowning geographical characteristic, ranging from east to west along an 800 km (500 mi) arc, with a diameter of 200 km(120 mi). The highest part of the range consists of the Rhône valley glacial trough and the Bernese Alps on the southern side from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. In Austria and Slovenia, the peaks in the eastern portion of the area are lower than the central and western sections.

Mont Blanc and Piz Bernina are respectively the highest ranges of Western Alps and Eastern Alps. Monte Rosa and Ortler are the second highest peaks.
