Complete Step by Step Answer - The October Revolution, also known as Red October, Bolshevik Revolution, Bolshevik Coup etc. was an uprising in Russia which would eventually lead to a civil war for the next 6 year. The Revolution was led by the ultra-left Bolshevik Party as its leader Vladimir Lenin. It started in Petrograd( now Saint Petersburg), the then Capital of the country and the seat of the Provisional Government. The February Revolution had taken place a few months ago and had overthrown the authoritarian Tsarist regime. Following that a provisional government had been formed which was dominated by the Socialist Revolutionary Party. The provisional government continued to be largely disliked, particularly because of Russia's continued involvement in the first world war. During the same time many councils or Soviets had come up in the Russian political space. They were organised by urban workers and criticised the provisional government. Soon calls for a military uprising were being echoed through these Soviets as well as within the Bolshevik Party.
On October 10, 1917, the Petrograd Soviet voted for a military uprising. On October 24, the government shut the city down in order to control or postpone the coup.
Some small conflicts broke out that day. However, the next day a full scale uprising against the Provisional Government broke out. The Bolshevik Red Guard started to occupy all government buildings one by one, eventually capturing the Winter Palace(the centre of the government). Following this sequence of events, the country plummeted into a Civil War which would end in 1923 with the establishment of the Soviet Union.

It was being fought against the Provisional Government which had been established after the February Revolution of 1917. The capturing of the Winter Palace and thereupon the whole city was the most important event of the October Revolution.
