Complete answer:
Option A – Population is the major difference between a hamlet and village. Some of the major differences are:

1)Village is defined as a small settlement of humans which are mainly situated in rural areas. It is although small in size as compared to the towns and cities but larger in size when compared to a hamlet.

2)A village consists of a population which ranges from few hundreds to few thousands and there exists a group of houses whereas a hamlet consists of only a few families living there.

3)Villages which are large in size may also consist of temples, churches, small shops etc. but a hamlet does not consist of these amenities.

4)A hamlet is settled mainly for the purpose of one economic activity such as a hamlet might be situated close to a mine and all the settlers in that place would be workers in that mine but in case of village development takes place which are converted into cities and towns.

Hence, the correct answer is option (A)

Note: Hamlet is known by different names in different regions such as in Haryana and Rajasthan it is known by the name ‘dhani’ or ‘thok’ whereas in Gujarat it is known as ‘nesada’ while in Maharashtra it is named as ‘pada’ and in south Bihar it is known as ‘bigha’.
The word is derived from an Anglo-Norman language ‘hamlet’ which means a little village.
In British geography hamlet is known to be smaller than a village.
