The layer of the ovarian stroma present immediately beneath the tunica albuginea is the cortex, which remains covered by a simple squamous mesothelium, known as the germinal epithelium. The cortex is primarily made up of reticular fibrous connective tissues, scattered in the form of antral follicles, in their primary or secondary stage. Reticulate fibres are connective tissue composed of type III collagen which is secreted by reticular cells. These fibers crosslink to form a fine meshwork called reticulin.
