Hint- Here, we will be using the formula that 1 metre = 10 decimetre in order to convert the unit decimetre in terms of the unit metre.
According to the problem, we have to convert 1 m 4 dm in m where m represents unit metre and dm represents unit decimetre.
As we know that 1 metre = 10 decimetre i.e., 1 m = 10 dm
$ \Rightarrow \dfrac{1}{{10}}$ m = 1 dm
$ \Rightarrow $1 dm = \[\dfrac{1}{{10}}\]m
$ \Rightarrow $4 dm = $\dfrac{4}{{10}}$m
1 m 4 dm = 1 m + 4 dm = 1 m + $\dfrac{4}{{10}}$m = $1 + \dfrac{4}{{10}}$m = $\dfrac{{10 + 4}}{{10}} = \dfrac{{14}}{{10}} = 1.4$ m
So, 1 m 4 dm = 1.4 m i.e., 1 metre 4 decimetre = 1.4 metre.
Note- If instead of converting 1 metre 4 decimetre in terms of metres, we are asked to convert 1 metre 4 decimetre in terms of decimetre, we will use the formula 1 metre = 10 decimetre directly. So, 1 metre 4 decimetre = (10+4) decimetre = 14 decimetre i.e., 1 m 4 dm = 14 dm.
