**Constitution Day?**
Constitution Day is celebrated on 26 November every year in India to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. This day holds immense significance in Indian history as it marks the formal acceptance of the foundational document that governs our nation.
The Indian Constitution was adopted on 26 November 1949 after nearly three years of deliberation by the Constituent Assembly. However, it came into effect on 26 January 1950, which we celebrate as Republic Day. The Constitution Day specifically honors the day when our Constitution was formally adopted and signed by the members of the Constituent Assembly.
This day was officially declared as Constitution Day in 2015 by the Government of India to honor Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution, on his 125th birth anniversary. Before 2015, 26 November was observed as Law Day in India. The decision to rename it as Constitution Day aimed to promote constitutional values and spread awareness about the importance of the Constitution among citizens.
The significance of this date extends beyond just historical importance. On Constitution Day, various activities are conducted across the country including:
• Reading of the Preamble in schools, colleges, and government offices
• Educational programs about constitutional rights and duties
• Seminars and discussions on constitutional values
• Special ceremonies in Parliament and state assemblies
The Indian Constitution is one of the longest written constitutions in the world, containing 395 articles divided into 22 parts, along with 12 schedules. It reflects the vision of our founding fathers for a democratic, secular, and inclusive India. Constitution Day serves as a reminder of our fundamental rights, directive principles, and fundamental duties that shape our democracy.
