Hint: Alkynes are the hydrocarbons (compounds which mainly consist of carbon and hydrogen atoms). They are unsaturated in nature which means that there are multiple bonds present in their structures. The name of these compounds are done by adding a prefix “-yne” to the name of the carbon chain. So, in the solution we will see the structure of ethyne and propyne and will know about their common names.

Complete answer:
We know that alkynes are the hydrocarbons (compounds which mainly consist of carbon and hydrogen atoms). They are unsaturated in nature which means that there are multiple bonds present in their structures. The name of these compounds are done by adding a prefix “-yne” to the name of the carbon chain.
An alkyne contains triple bonds between two carbon atoms and hence, there should be at least two carbon atoms present to form an alkyne. If there are two carbon atoms in an alkyne then it is known as ethyne and if there are three carbon atoms in the alkyne then it is known as propyne.
The structures of ethyne and propyne are:

The common name of ethyne is acetylene and that of propyne is methylacetylene.

Note:
There are two more types of hydrocarbons which are known as alkanes and alkenes. Alkanes are the saturated hydrocarbons in which there are no multiple bonds in their structures. Alkenes are the unsaturated hydrocarbons and these hydrocarbons contain double bonds in their structures. Each of the alkanes, alkenes and alkynes have different physical and chemical properties.
