Complete answer:
In grammar, conjunction may be a part of speech that connects words, phrases, or clauses that are called the conjuncts of the conjunctions.
Conjunctions have a crucial function because they join other words and phrases together. Without conjunctions, we could only make very, very simple sentences. Some conjunctions contain multiple words. They are called correlative conjunctions. There are bigger conjunctions in this group, which are preferred to be placed at the beginning of the sentence, as they tend to make the sentence clumpy when placed in the middle.
However, ‘but’ is not one of these conjunctions.
So, the sentence will be split up into two parts: The first part will be ‘He had not got timely first aid’ and the second part will be ‘he would have died of his injuries’.
The conjunction ‘if’ places a condition. So, the condition placed by it required a negative verb. This is why the first part is negative. This means that originally if there was no condition in the sentence, that part will be positive.
The conjunction ‘but’ is never used as a starting word for a sentence. So, it will be placed in the middle of the two phrases. However, the order will be decided by the outcome part. The result is ‘he would have died’. Then, there is a reason why he did not die. So, the answer will be written in the following way:
‘He would have died of his injuries, but he got timely first-aid’.

Note:
When you begin a sentence with ‘if’, it becomes a conjunction. These conjunctions are used to join sentences with two main subject matters. ‘Although’ is also one of these conjunctions. However, the word ‘but’ never starts a sentence.
