Hint: Central nervous system integrates the received information and then it coordinates and influences the activity of all parts of the body.
Complete answer:
This statement is true that the central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord.
Brain plays a central role in the control of most bodily functions and it includes bodily functions like movements, sensations, thoughts, speech, awareness and memory.
Spinal cord pathways help in some reflex movements without the participation of brain structures.
Spinal cord is connected to the brainstem where cranial nerves exit and it runs through the spinal cord.
Nerve roots exit the spinal cord to the both sides of the body and spinal cord carries signals back and forth between the brain and peripheral nerves. There is cerebrospinal fluid which surrounds the brain and also the spinal cord. This fluid circulates within the cavities of the central nervous system and that is called ventricles.
Brain and spinal cord are surrounded by leptomeninges and there are 3 meningeal layers from where the cerebrospinal fluid circulate
Three meningeal layers are pia mater, dura mater and arachnoid mater.
-Dura mater is the outer and thicker layer which serves as the role of a protective shield lying underneath the bones of the skull and vertebral column.
-Arachnoid mater is the middle layer which is found beyond the dura mater and it acts as a cushion to the brain.
-Pia mater is the innermost and thin layer which tightly adheres to the surface of the brain and spinal cord.
The basic unit of the central nervous system is the neuron which allows the different parts of the body to communicate with each other via the brain and spinal cord. There are myelin coat nerve cells which allow the nerves to communicate quickly.
Hence, the correct answer is option (A).
Note: Since the central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord, this statement is true not false. It is also shown in the diagram. Brain plays a central role to perform body functions and the spinal cord helps in reflex movements and it also relays the information to the CNS or from CNS to the motor neurons.
