Can anyone please explain how the French people established their control over Vietnam?

The French first landed in Vietnam in 1858 and by the mid-1880s had established firm control on the northern part of Vietnam. They also defeated the Chinese forces within the Franco - Chinese War and took control of Tonkin and Annam. In 1887, French Indo-China was established. Therefore under three decades or 30 years enables the French to establish strong control over Vietnam.

France obtained control over northern Vietnam following its victory over China within the Sino-French War (1884–85). The geographic area was formed on 17 October 1887 from Annam, Tonkin, Cochinchina (which together form modern Vietnam) and also the Kingdom of Cambodia; Laos was added after the Franco-Siamese War in 1893.
