Brain is a delicate organ which needs to be protected against injuries and shocks. The hard covering over the delicate organs helps in preventing any direct shock or injury to the organs.
The brain, master organ of the body is protected by the hard bony covering called as skull or cranium and also it has three thin membranes known as meninges.
The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is present between the meninges and brain which acts as a shock absorber and thus helps in the protection of the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid also plays a role in providing nutrition to the brain and it removes waste from the brain.
Brain consists of three parts:
- Forebrain which is the foremost part of the brain, and is the main thinking part and controls all actions done voluntarily by the body.
- Mid brain – it is present between forebrain and hindbrain and is concerned with involuntary actions of the body.
- Hindbrain – it is the last part of the brain which further continues to the spinal cord, it has three different regions called pons, medulla and cerebellum. It also controls involuntary actions like precision of decisions, salivation, vomiting etc.
Spinal cord is present below the brain and extends to the backbone or vertebral column (covering) is concerned with the control and regulation of the reflex actions.
Note: Brain and spinal both are associated with each other and present very close to each other, covering of brain is cranium and that of spinal cord is vertebral column, which should not be confused with each other.
