Blue-green algae are bacteria which is called cyanobacteria, they are normally green or bluish. They belong to the phylum Cyanophyta, which is part of the kingdom prokaryotes. Bluegreen algae perform photosynthesis due to the presence of a flattened sac-like structure called thylakoid. Cyanobacteria are thought to have converted the early earth reducing environment into an oxidizing atmosphere that creates great oxygenation events and that cause rusting of earth, which almost brings the extinction of all anaerobic organisms.
Cyanobacteria is the primary producer of freshwater ecosystems and marine water ecosystems, due to performing photosynthesis processes. on theses organism primary consumer called zooplankton feed and they are also fed by small crustaceans or fish and create food web or chain
Apart from primary producers, cyanobacteria produce numbers of toxins called cyanotoxins, which pose danger to humans and animals of aquatic life
Some of the cyanobacteria use as fertilizer to enhance the fertility of the soil which help in yield production of the crop, some of the cyanobacteria are responsible for the fixation of free atmospheric nitrogen in anaerobic condition, which is a specialized cell called heterocysts. Nitrogen is fixed into ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates, which are absorbed by the plant and converted into protein and nucleic acids.

Note: Cyanobacteria show endosymbiotic relation with chloroplast organelle, early chloroplast organelle found in some eukaryotic organism where it performs photosynthesis and later both cells evolve and develop endosymbiotic relation, the genome of the Chloroplast give evidence of endosymbiosis.
