The first Peshwa to come from the Bhat family was Balaji Vishwanath Bhat (1662–1720), also known as Shrimant Peshwa Balaji Vishwanath. Later, during the 18th century, they gained effective control of the Maratha Empire. At the age of 58, on 2 April 1720, Balaji Vishwanath died in the Maratha Empire village of Saswad, near Pune.

He was succeeded by Baji Rao I (1700-1740), popularly known as Bajirao Ballal. Baji Rao: I was the eldest son of Balaji Vishwanath. At a very young age, Shahu was appointed Peshwa on 17 April 1720. He was a celebrated general of the Maratha Empire and a statesman, sometimes considered to be one of the most powerful conquerors. Bajirao fought over 41 major battles in his 20-year military career, and many others are known to have never lost their war.

Bajirao Ballal was born in Dubere, Maratha, on August 18, 1700. He was Balaji Vishwanath and Radhabai Barve's son. His father taught him to be a negotiator and a warrior, so he showed a passion for the army at a very young age and always accompanied his father on military campaigns.

Chattrapati Shahu faced a lot of criticism and opposition from other chieftains when Shahu named the 20-year-old Baji Rao as Peshwa after his father's Balaji.
Bajirao Ballal was known for his fast tactical battle moves.

Baji Rao I died at the age of 39 in Raverkhedi, Maratha Empire, on 28 April 1740 (Present day Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh, India). A virulent fever was the reason for his death.
