The Marathas were the only major power left in India, after the death of Tipu Sultan. Also, it was the only major power that was not controlled by the British. This was the reason behind all the Anglo Maratha wars. In that period the Maratha Confederacy comprised five chiefs, Pune was headed by Peshwas, Baroda was headed by Gaekwads, Indore was headed by Holkars, Gwalior was headed by Scindias, and Nagpur was headed by Bhonsle’s. There were inner quarrels among themselves. After the death of Madhav Rao II, Baji Rao II was made the head of Peshwas. Yashwantrao Holkar defeated the Peshwas and the Scindias in the Battle of Poona which led to Baji Rao II the treaty of Bassein in Dec 1802 in order to seek British protection. Because of this treaty, he had to surrender a lot of his territory to the British and had to provide for the British troops. This treaty was not accepted by the Scindias and the Bhonsles, which soon resulted in the second Anglo Maratha war. On 13 November 1804, the Battle of Deeg took place, now in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. The British were successful in defeating the Marathas. There were a lot of casualties in this battle, even Major General Fraser who was leading the British army was wounded.
