Tracheids are different from other tracheary elements because they are imperforate. These cells have pits that support upward and lateral conduction of water. They are short and single celled, on the other hand vessels are composed of many cells and almost 10 cm long. Tracheids have hard lignified walls and the lumen is wide. Vessels are more suitable for conduction of sap because of the presence of perforation. Both tracheary elements contain casparian stripes which are made up of cell wall material, lignin and suberin. Water conduction is generally unidirectional in nature.
