Energy can be of various types like Kinetic energy, Thermal energy, Chemical Energy, Electrical energy, Magnetic Energy, Mechanical Energy, Radioactive energy and many other forms.

Potential Energy
Potential energy is defined as the energy gained by matter due to its position or arrangement. It is often called stored energy, as it's ready to go energy. A simple example of Potential energy can be given as a sled that is placed on a hill or pendulum when it is at the top of its swing. Potential energy is commonly calculated by formula
$ E = mgh $
where E is the potential energy, m is the mass of the matter or object, g is the acceleration due to gravity and h is the height at which the object is kept.
Kinetic Energy
Kinetic energy is defined as the energy which is associated with the motion of the matter or object. Atoms and their particles are in motion so all matter has some kinetic energy. We can say that any object in motion will possess some kinetic energy. it is calculated by the formula
$ KE = \dfrac{1}{2}m{v^2} $
where K.E is the Kinetic energy, m is mass of object and v is the velocity of object.
Note:
Potential energy associated with height is also known as Gravitational potential energy. Potential energy can have negative signs because it is associated with the position of the object. A typical unit for both Kinetic Energy and Potential Energy is Joule.
