Hint: While veins usually carry deoxygenated blood from tissues back to the heart, in this case, pulmonary veins are among the few veins that carry oxygenated blood instead. Oxygenated blood from the lungs is circulated back to the heart through the pulmonary veins that drain into the left atrium.
Complete answer:
Note: The heart ventricles have stronger muscular walls than the atrium. This is because, compared with the atria, blood is pumped out of the heart at higher pressure from these chambers. There is also a thicker muscular wall in the left ventricle than in the right ventricle.
Complete answer:
Following are the functions :
A. Pulmonary veins - These are responsible for the transport of oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart.
B. Pulmonary arteries - These are responsible for the transport of deoxygenated (oxygen-depleted) blood away from the heart to the lungs for oxygenation.
C. Aorta - It is the largest artery of the body. Aorta is present at the top of the left ventricle which is the heart's muscular pumping chamber. The heart is responsible for pumping blood from the left ventricle into the aorta and through it to various organs.
D. Septum - It separates different chambers of the heart and thus, the oxygenated blood from the deoxygenated blood.
The septum prevents blood between the two sides of the heart from mixing. However, in the upper or lower septum, some babies are born with holes. An atrial septal defect is called a hole in the septum between the heart's two upper chambers (ASD).
Note: The heart ventricles have stronger muscular walls than the atrium. This is because, compared with the atria, blood is pumped out of the heart at higher pressure from these chambers. There is also a thicker muscular wall in the left ventricle than in the right ventricle.
