Apart from being just epics, stories they also teach us about the ideals of life.
Complete answer: Mahabharata and Ramayana are the two most popular epics in the Hindu religion and also famous in other religions too. This story was written about 1500 years ago and Bhagavad Gita was also included in the Mahabharata.
-Although the story of Mahabharata is set on a family drama followed by a war, it teaches us how to fight for the right cause. It gives hours of lessons to stand by what is right and to follow one's Dharma or duty even if it meant going against one's own family.
-In the story, the Pandavas were dethroned by Duryodhan diplomatically. It also gives us the lesson of diplomacy which is very much important and followed in today's world.
-The stories give us the moral of tolerance and respect for elders and many teachings of ideal life etc. The Bhagwat Geeta which is also a part of Mahabharat, tells us about the mysteries of life and the life before and after the death.
Ramayana was based on Ram who was the prince of kosala and was sent to exile while his wife Sita was kidnapped by the king of Lanka known as Ravana.
-It teaches us the virtues of a realistic and idealistic human being who followed the system of humanity, respect and justice in a humble way. He fought for his rights and for justice.
-Another important teaching or lessons that we get from Ramayana is that the truth always prevails over evil in the society. Especially in today's world when people are disappointed with governments and their functionings and faced odds and strong opponents just like lord Rama and Ravana faced, it became the most important lesson to relate in today's time.
-In today's world when society and people are divided in caste, class, groups, religions, sects etc, it seems impossible for them to come together and help each other. Such as the cases of violence against the dalit community or the minorities around the world. It is the time to stand with each other irrespective of the differences. Here comes the most important lesson to relate in today's world which is unity in diversity. It is a necessity to ensure victory over the evil forces.
Therefore these two stories which were written a very long time ago still hold prevalence and popularity in the society. Their lessons and morals can be related even in today's world when society is so complex.
Note: Epics are long compositions about the heroic deeds of women and men. They also include stories about gods as well, therefore Mahabharat and Ramayan are known as great epics. Mahabharat is written by Vyasa and Ramayana is written and composed by Valmiki.
