Complete answer:
The phylum chordata includes animals having different characteristics at different stages in their life. The major characteristics of this phylum is undermentioned:
Notochord can be described as a longitudinal rod like structure composed of cartilage that runs between the nerve cord and the digestive tract. It plays vital function in supporting the nerve cord. In case of vertebrate animals the vertebral column gets replaced by the notochord.
Dorsal Nerve Cord can be described as a bundle of nerve fibres which is responsible for the connection of the brain to the muscles and other organs present in the body.
Post-anal tail can be described as an extension of the body beyond the anus, which may contain skeletal muscles for the purpose of locomotion in some chordates.
Pharyngeal slits can be described as the openings which are responsible for the connection between the mouth and the throat. These openings perform the function of allowing the entry of water through the mouth, without permitting it entering in the digestive system.

Note:
The fastest animal on the earth is known to be the Peregrine Falcon. The biggest animal on the earth is known to be the blue whale. The three-toed sloths are considered to be the slowest animal on the earth. Peregrine Falcon, blue whale and three-toed sloth, all fall under the Phylum Chordata.
