Different types of indirect characterization are as follows:

- Thoughts: What do the character's private thoughts and emotions reveal about him or her?
- Effect: What impact does the character have on the audience? What do other characters think or act like when they're around him?
- Actions: What does the character do in his or her actions?
- Looks: What do you mean by looks? What is the character's appearance and how does he or she dress?

An example of indirect characterization is: Tim's boss summoned him to his office when it was time to go. He informed Tim that he would not receive his weekly pay until he completed a report on a new product. His boss then got up, switched off the lights, and walked out of the office to go home. Tim returned to his desk with a stumbling gait.
