Hint: Settlements are the areas where people construct their homes. Because they lived in trees and caves, humans did not need to build settlements. It became necessary to have a permanent dwelling when they began to raise crops. As a result of the abundant water and fertile land, towns began to spring up near river valleys.

Complete answer:
Temporary settlements are those that are only occupied for a limited period of time. Deep forests, scorching and cold deserts, and mountains are examples of transitory communities. People who live in these makeshift villages engage in activities such as hunting, gathering, shifting farming, and transhumance.

Human beings were less reliant on nature for food, shelter, and clothing as time passed. In ancient times, people lived as nomads. They used to go from place to place looking for food. They never stayed in one area for too long. They were completely engulfed in foliage. However, as time passed, man began to alter the environment to meet his demands. They began growing food, constructing dwellings, and establishing better transportation and communication systems.

Houses are constructed in rural locations in accordance with the environment such as –
- Houses with slanting roofs are seen in areas where there is a lot of rain.
- Water logging occurs when houses are built on a raised platform or on stilts when it rains.
- Houses with strong mud walls and thatched roofs can be seen in hot climates. Houses are built with locally available materials like stones, mud, and so on.

Note: Nomads live in makeshift settlements because they must constantly move in search of sustenance for themselves and their cattle. The nomads are always on the move, either in search of food or in order to trade. Nomads move regularly to avoid extreme weather because of the extreme weather conditions.
