Hint: Poultry is the rearing of domestic fowl, ducks, geese, pheasants, turkeys, and other birds for their meat and eggs. The indigenous breeds are crossed with exotic breeds for improving egg production.
Complete answer: The bacterial diseases of the poultry are:
Respiratory diseases- Most of the respiratory diseases in poultry are bacterial diseases. One such disease is caused by Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale. This bacteria can infect birds of all ages and sometimes maybe fatal also.
The common symptoms of this disease are sneezing, dyspnea, coughing and nasal discharge. Sometimes neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms may also occur. These symptoms are more severe in meat producing birds. The diagnosis of this infection can be done by ELISA, agar gel, polymerase chain reaction, bacterial culture, etc.
The disease can be treated by antibiotic treatment but the choice of antibiotic should be as per the severity of infection. Vaccination against the disease has also been proved to be useful in preventing the disease.
Fowl cholera- The other names of the disease are avian cholera or avian hemorrhagic septicemia. It is the most common pasteurellosis of poultry which is caused by Pasteurella multocida. The bacteria infects adult birds and old chickens more. Turkeys, geese, raptors, ducks, canaries are also more susceptible to this disease. It may be fatal also in severe cases.
The symptoms of the disease include green diarrhea, swelling of wattles. Pneumatic bones, hock joints, sinuses, sternal bursa, foot pads, oviducts and peritoneal cavity are also affected in this infection.
It can be treated by intramuscular injections of tetracycline and the same antibiotic given in the drinking water simultaneously to the poultry. The symptoms will be treated within a week of the antibiotic course.
Note: Disease is a condition of any kind of discomfort or uneasiness in the body due to attack by external agents called pathogens like bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. The disease caused by bacteria is called a bacterial disease and it is usually treated with antibiotics.
