Hint : We have to find the reason why in winter an iron chair feels colder than a wooden chair. The reason for an iron chair to be colder has something to do with the conduction process because we feel the coldness due to conduction. So, if we compare the conduction property of wood and iron we can get the answer.
Complete step by step answer
The substances that allow heat to pass through them are called heat conductors. And the substances that do not allow heat to pass through them are called non-conductors of heat. And the process is known as conduction
Heat is transferred within a substance when kinetic energy of atoms in the substance is vibrating within the substance and is transferred between the other atoms of the substance. Heat conduction of the material depends on the density of the material. Denser the material efficient heat conduction.
The substance that does not conduct heat is known as heat insulators i.e. the non-conductors of heat.
Iron has a higher density than wood. So iron conducts heat more efficiently than wood.
Now an iron chair will be cold in the winter season if we touch the iron chair in winter, heat flows out from our hand to the iron chair. Due to the heat in our body which is conducted to the iron chair which conducts the heat efficiently we feel the coldness.
A wooden chair will also be cold in the winter season if we touch the wooden chair in winter, heat flows out from our hand to the wooden chair. The heat in our body is conducted to the wooden chair which conducts the heat (partially not good as iron) we feel less compared to the coldness of iron chair.
This is the reason why we feel colder when we touch the iron chair and less cold when we touch the wooden chair.
Note
Conduction of heat is known as thermal conductivity, because the material which conducts electricity is also known as conductors. Some of the good conductors of heat are non-conductors of electricity.
