Ans: The Great Stone Face was remembered by the poet. Ernest heard about the writings and had read them. While reading, Ernest lifted his face towards the mountains and said to it “O Great Stone Face, is not this man worthy to be your likeness?”

2. “O Great Stone Face, is not this man worthy to be your likeness?” Who spoke these lines? Who is “this man” in the dialogue?

Ans: These lines were spoken by Ernest as he read the poems about the Great Stone Face. The man in these lines refers to the poet.

3. Who came to meet Ernest?

Ans: The poet thought of Ernest’s character and longed to meet him therefore, one day in summer, he visited Ernest who was at his door reading the book.

4. How did Ernest react to the poet’s arrival?

Ans: Ernest reacted with a positive response to the poet’s arrival. When the poet asked if he could stay a night at his place, Ernest agreed and remarked that he had never seen the Great Stone Face look so kind to a stranger.

1. What did Ernest realise as he listened to the poet?

Ans: As Ernest listened to the poet, he imagined the Great Stone Face bending forward to hear what he had to say. Ernest looked into the eyes of the poet and asked him who he was? The poet pointed out the book that Ernest was reading and mentioned that it is he who wrote the poems of the book. Ernest examined the poet’s face and features and then glanced at the Great Stone Face and felt miserable.

2. What made Ernest sad? What did he tell the poet?

Ans: Ernest was disappointed because he couldn't see the connection between the poet and the Great Stone Face. When the poet asked him the reason, Ernest told him that all his life he had been awaiting the fulfilment of a prophecy and when he read his poems, he believed that the poet might be the one who would fulfil the prophecy because he resembled all of the traits of the Great Stone Face.

3. Why did the poet say that he is not worthy of the Great Stone Face’s likeness? 

Ans: The poet answered Ernest that he was not the worthy one of the Great Stone Face’s likeness as he could not be considered as a great person. His life was different from his thoughts with big dreams. The poet often lacked faith in his own belief and thoughts. He asked Ernest if he could help him in finding the face of the mountain. Both of them were teary-eyed and spoke sadly of how miserable the poet’s life has been.

4. Why and what did Ernest talk to the neighbours and others in the valley? 

Ans: While Ernest and the poet decided to look for the face of the mountain, Ernest spoke about what was in his heart and mind with neighbours and people of the valley who agreed with Ernest’s thoughts. For them, his words were the words of life. 

5. Who was the face of the Great Stone Face?

Ans: While people were looking for the face of the Great Stone Face, the poet realised something about Ernest. People were listening to Ernest, from a distance he noticed that high up in the golden light of the setting sun, the Great Stone Face appeared with white mists around it, like the white hairs on Ernest's brow. To him, Ernest’s face looked so similar that he asked him to stay still as he told everyone that Ernest himself is the likeness of the Great Stone Face.
